We understand that some students may have conflicts with Welcome Week
and may wish to be excused from some or all of the programming. While we
are sensitive to that fact, Welcome Week is a required program and your
attendance is integral to your transition to the University. We will,
however, make exemptions on a case-by-case basis for students who
demonstrate a conflict that we deem sufficient to warrant an exemption.
The Welcome Week experience and the choice to attend, is similar to the
decisions you will make every day of your undergraduate career of
whether or not to attend class, meet with an academic adviser, or become
involved in student activities. While the opportunity to ‘skip class’
exists, attending class is highly correlated to academic success. Welcome Week, like your classes, is designed to enhance both your
academic experience and build a sense of community. Missing Welcome Week
could have a negative impact on your University of Minnesota experience.
In Spring 2009, we will create a process to apply for an exemption. At that time, we will carefully review
your exemption form and advise you of our decision.
Examples of potentially warranted exemptions include, but are not
limited to, medical need, dependent child care, severe illness,
unexpected family emergencies, active military duty or certain
obligations with the Minnesota State Fair.
PSEO students are required to participate.
It should be noted that any student who is granted an exemption will still be required to participate in certain Welcome Week activities including Convocation, College Day programming, as well as the events on Friday.
