Orientation

With Graduate Student Orientation, there are a variety of different programs for you to attend, and a number of things to keep in mind. On the left of this page, please review the links under "Getting Started " and "Orientation" to assure you are set to go!

Orientation Fee: Graduate Student Orientation is funded through a mandatory $50.00 Orientation Fee assessed to all Graduate School students new to the University of Minnesota. This fee- assessed at class registration- is non-refundable, regardless of your participation in Graduate Student Orientation.

August 18-21

Graduate Student Orientation consists of a Welcome Day, Writing Workshops, a University Libraries session, and tours. You can choose to attend as many or as few sessions as you would like.

Welcome Day

August 20-21
9:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m.
On Welcome Day, there will be a variety of different sessions, including:

  • Resource Fair
  • Welcome
  • Guarding Your Academic Integrity
  • Lunch
  • Your Relationship with Your Adviser and Graduate Faculty
  • Now That You're Working at the "U"
  • Mini-workshop options: U Card, Library, Parking & Transportation, One Stop Student Services
  • Involvement Panel with Graduate Students

Writing Workshops

Native Speakers of English: August 18, 19 or September 13
8:30 - 8:45 am: Check-in, Ground Floor, Coffman Memorial Union
9:00 - 4:00 pm: Writing Workshop

Non-Native Speakers of English: August 18, 19 or September 13
8:30 - 8:45 am: Check-in, Ground Floor, Coffman Memorial Union
9:00 - 4:00 pm: Writing Workshop

Your writing at the graduate level may be one of the greatest challenges you face. These two workshops, one for native speakers of English and one for non-native speakers of English, will help you prepare for this upcoming challenge.

University Libraries: The Key to Graduate Success

August 22, 9:00 am-12:00 pm

This three-hour workshop will guide you through essential library resources and tools available to support your research and studies. Learn time saving techniques and helpful tips to ensure your academic success.
