Marketing Intern

The OFYP Marketing Intern works directly with sponsors, community partners, and University collaborators to manage OFYP projects that help to offset program costs. This includes advertising sales for the Gopher Guide (the official University planner), sponsorship agreements with Explore U vendors, and other promotional opportunities. The marketing intern will also have the opportunity to plan and facilitate social media for OFYP.


  • Manage database of OFYP sponsors and vendors, both current and potential
  • Monitor and respond to email and phone calls from sponsors and vendors, managing details and relationships
  • Coordinate and implement various sales and solicitation efforts throughout the year for events, publications and meals.
  • Collect and analyze feedback from different sponsors and vendors pertaining to their experience with OFYP
  • Assist in event planning, such as Explore U, during Welcome Week
  • Track results of solicitation and recruitment efforts
  • Work consistently with other staff members in charge of programs, communications, business operations, technology and graphic design
  • Partner with office assistants in completing front desk tasks such as answering the phone during busy season
  • Create content and posts for various OFYP social media outlets

Specific Duties/Projects Include:

  • Solicit advertisements for the Gopher Guide student planner during fall and spring semesters and work with communications team to track ad sales/placement
  • Solicit Explore U participants during spring semester and summer
  • Assist in developing cohesive marketing content for all solicitation elements of OFYP
  • Assist in coordinating and implementing Explore U, a local business fair for over 4,000 new students
  • Create reports on various projects
  • Back up Office Assistants when needed, knowing basic functions of this role including the programs and operations of the OFYP Office
  • Solicit restaurants for student/leader/staff meals during programs and assist in coordinating meals during welcome programs
  • Support professional staff with sending invoices and tracking payments from vendors
  • Support Assistant Director in management of OFYP sponsorships
  • Work with professional staff to implement social media strategies

The intern will leave this position with the following skill set:

  • Extensive experience in sales of both advertisement and access to target demographics
  • Ability to determine an external constituents’ need and to articulate an appropriate solution
  • Project manage both large and small-scale marketing efforts
  • Understand the steps of coordinating a large event
  • Experience in an office setting and managing work among a team of professionals
  • Ability to create professional communication and develop professional relationships


  • Undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities
  • Demonstrates initiative
  • Is punctual, reliable and consistent
  • Is approachable, positive, friendly, and has a proactive customer service philosophy
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Has patience and the ability to adapt to changing situations
  • Strong communications skills in-person, via email, and on the phone
  • Can multitask, prioritize and work in an environment that is stressful at times
  • Enjoys working as part of a team, but is equally comfortable working independently
  • Has a student-centered philosophy when working with vendors

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in sales or solicitation
  • Knowledge on marketing to both a university and a corporate demographic
  • Proven ability to manage projects
  • Knowledge about Orientation & First-Year Programs 

Supervisor: Bill O’Connor (, Assistant Director of Communication, but will also work with other professional staff members throughout the year on additional projects.

Compensation: $10.00/hour

Time Commitment: December 2017 - Fall 2018

  • 10 hours per week during the school year (December 2017 will be limited hours for training purposes)
  • Approximately 20-30 hours per week during the summer
  • Candidates must be available through September 2018
  • In fall of 2018, there is potential to be rehired through fall 2019
