Request for Proposals for 2016-17 Funding from the International Student Academic Services Fee – due February 5

As you may recall, beginning in 2013-14, University of Minnesota Twin Cities international undergraduate students are assessed a fee for international student academic services. The resources generated from the fee were to enhance academic services for international students, with the focus of ensuring retention, timely graduation, and student satisfaction with their University of Minnesota experience. Since the fee was implemented, numerous projects supporting international students have received funding. Funded activities included additional tutoring in the MN English Language Program, development of new courses specifically for international students, multilingual learning specialists in the Center for Writing, training and professional development for instructors of non-native speakers of writing courses, conducting the international student barometer survey, additional intercultural training support in International Student and Scholar Services, and career counseling for international students. Visit here to reference types of proposals funded.

I am writing to solicit proposals for funding for 2016-17 activities, and these requests are due February 5. Information about the fee process can be found here. To submit a proposal click here. Units may submit multiple requests, but must use a separate online submission for each project. If your unit already has received approval of funds for 2016-17 or 2017-18 through previous processes, you do not need to re-request those funds. That existing commitment has been noted. As you prepare proposals, please keep in mind that the amount of new revenue generated by this fee in 2016-17 and available for allocation will be about $700,000. If you have specific questions about funding levels as you develop your proposal, please contact Beth Lingren Clark or Paul Strykowski for further information.

I have appointed a small committee to review new proposals, and to review progress reports from prior years’ projects. Now that we have three years of history with reviewing proposals, we have refined the criteria and clarified some types of projects that would not be appropriate to support with this funding source. As is the case for all fees assessed of students, the general principle is that the fee charged should be used to benefit those students who are paying the fee at the time that they are paying the fee.

Thank you for your work on supporting our international undergraduate students, and I look forward to seeing your proposals.
