For Your University of Minnesota New Student Orientation

Plan for your arrival at Orientation

Please follow the directions listed on the above Website. DO NOT USE GPS DIRECTIONS, as these routes will be incorrect. Please allow plenty of time for getting to campus, as traffic congestion around campus can happen.

After parking in the East River Road Garage, then head to Coffman Union’s ground floor for Orientation Check-In.

Check-In begins at 8:00 a.m.
Although you can check-in anytime between 8:00-9:30 a.m., make sure you plan ahead if you want to attend any of the morning sessions. Go here for a list of these sessions as well as a complete overview of your Orientation schedule.

Attention International Students: You must complete Check-In by 8:15 a.m. to have time to get to your first required immigration session at 8:30 a.m.

Are your parents/family registered for Orientation?
Will a parent or family member accompany you to Orientation? If so, they are encouraged to register in advance for the Parent Orientation program and attend on your Day 1. Go here for more information and registration.

Be sure to bring the following items.

  • University Internet ID and memorized password
  • Name of health insurance company and policy number (you may purchase University insurance instead)
  • $6.00 per day for parking
  • Photo ID for U Card
  • Backpack for your materials
  • Notebook and pen or pencil
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes
  • Umbrella in case of rain
  • Money to buy lunch on Day 2
  • U Minnesota app iconSmartphone/mobile device and charger (optional if you want to access Class of 2021 orientation materials electronically through U Minnesota)

To prepare for your course registration, check out the How To Guides. This will prepare you for your advising appointment so you can register for fall classes.

Have you uploaded your photo for your U Card? Save time at Orientation by uploading the photo you want.

Overnight accommodations are not provided between the day 1 and day 2 August orientation programs. You can learn about housing options during these dates here.

Your Day 1 of Orientation will end at approximately 9:45 p.m.
