Provost's Welcome to the Class of 2014

Dear Members of the Class of 2014,

Welcome to the University of Minnesota! A great academic and personal adventure awaits you.

Never has our freshman class been so academically strong, with such rich diversity, with so much promise, and with so many new opportunities to explore. Warm congratulations on your admission to the Class of 2014; you should be proud of the accomplishments that got you here and excited to begin the new adventure that awaits you.

As the University’s chief academic officer, with responsibility for managing the policies and practices that affect the academic life of the University as a whole, I see this campus as a community working together to help understand and solve some of the world’s most urgent problems. Join us on this journey by contributing to the University’s longstanding tradition of searching for answers to issues with local, national, and global implications.

In the next four years at this University, you will develop and nurture your strengths and talents, and may find some new ones as well. Be open to exploring new academic interests, new activities, and new friendships. Challenge yourself to stretch and to grow and to discover how you can make a positive difference in the world. Working with our great faculty and your fellow students on one of the most academically comprehensive campuses in the world, at such a momentous time in our planet’s history, is truly an opportunity for you of a lifetime.

Be sure to take advantage of office time and other opportunities to engage with our faculty. They are here to teach you and you are here to learn from them. But unlike high school, you will need to take the first step. Please do so; you will be glad you did. Also, don’t feel shy about conveying your suggestions and ideas to me and to others. Dialogue between students and their faculty, and students and administrators all help enrich our community. Please make the most of all we offer here, intellectually, culturally, and socially.

Welcome again to your new home. I look forward to meeting you and seeing you graduate with your class in four years. My best wishes for an outstanding freshman year.
