Mark your calendars for the biennial Focusing on the First Year Conference to take advantage of the opportunity to dialogue and strategize about academic and student development issues relating to first-year students. This conference will be held at Coffman Memorial Union on the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2013. All University faculty, staff, and administrators are invited to attend.

Keynote and special guest Jennifer Keup, is the director of the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at the University of South Carolina. In this role, Dr. Keup works with a global network of educators and is responsible for all operational and strategic aspects of the Center towards its mission to support and advance efforts to improve student learning and transitions into and through higher education.

Her research interests focus on students’ personal and academic development during the transition from high school to college; the influence of campus programming on adjustment to college; and issues of institutional impact, responsiveness, and transformation in higher education. Keup has been a frequent contributor in higher education, both as a presenter and author.

The First-Year Conference invites you to submit a proposal for presentation or a poster session that will help the University community learn more about the first-year experience and student engagement. Presentations and poster sessions may include specific campus topics, innovative programs, national trends, cross-campus collaborations, assessment results or theoretical frameworks relating to our work with first-year students.
