Dear parent or guardian,
We are thrilled that your student is considering the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for their college experience. We would like to invite you to attend Parent Orientation with your student in August! At Parent Orientation, you will gain valuable information to help you support your student, even if you have another student in college or you are an alumnus of the U of M.
If your student decides to attend the University of Minnesota, we want you to have the information and tools that you need to play an active role in their first-year experience. Student success is our top priority at the U of M, and we recognize that your encouragement, guidance, and advice will remain vitally important to your student over the next four years.
What Steps Should Parents Take Today?
Step 1. Encourage Your Student To Confirm Enrollment Early
When students confirm their enrollment, they are reserving a place in the freshman class. Students who confirm their enrollment will be able to access their New Student Checklist and select a New Student Orientation date. (The deadline to confirm is May 1.) Please note: The enrollment confirmation fee takes a minimum of 2-3 business days to process; students will not be able to access the New Student Checklist until then.
Step 2. Ask About Recent Communication
Your student is receiving important information about the University of Minnesota in the mail, by email, and through social media. Be sure to talk with your student about this information and encourage them to seek answers to their questions.
Step 3. Register To Attend Parent Orientation
U of M research shows that when parents and family members attend Parent Orientation, their students are more successful during the first year of college. Parent Orientation is a one-day program with optional sessions on day two. (Student Orientation is two days). Student and Parent Orientation programs begin together on Day 1 and split into separate sessions by late morning.
The parent registration site will be available April 4. The process for registering for Parent Orientation is separate from your students registration. Please attend Orientation together when possible.
