Reminders for You to Plan Your Arrival

Start the International Student Online Preparation Course
The 2016 International Student Online Preparation Course is now available through the New Student section of the ISSS website. This course will help you prepare for your time at the University of Minnesota by giving you important information about visa regulations, what to expect when you arrive and more. All new international students must complete this course at least one week before Immigration Check-In and your New Student Orientation.

New Student Orientation
Do you have your Orientation date yet? New Student Orientation is a required program where you will learn about campus, meet with your academic advisor, and register for classes. If you do not know your date, please check your New Student Checklist.

Immigration Check-In for transfer students will be held in two parts during your Transfer Student Orientation. You must attend both sections for the hold on your record to be lifted so you can register for classes. Please bring the original and a copy of your documents with you.

Sign Up for Global Gopher Events: August 22-September 2
Start your UMN experience in the best possible way with Global Gopher Events! These events are a special opportunity to meet other new international students, make new friends, prepare for classes, and discover all of the amazing services the University offers. You can also get advice from experienced international student leaders.

The Global Gopher Events schedule is now available on the ISSS website! Please review it and sign up for the sessions you plan to attend. We look forward to meeting you in August.

NOTE: All Global Gopher Events are optional, and you should not miss your orientation or Welcome Week in order to attend these events. To learn more about your orientation requirements, review your New Student Checklist.

Transfer Welcome Days: September 1-4
Learn more and register for this official welcome to all new transfer students.

Gold Book
Gold Book is a resource to assist you in your transition to the University of Minnesota. Please review Gold Book prior to your New Student Orientation.

Reserve Temporary Housing
All new international students can stay in the International Reception Center (IRC) starting July 15 until August 28. At $23 a night, the IRC is an inexpensive temporary on-campus housing option. Reserve a space at www.housing.umn.edu/international/irc. Please note, only students can stay in the IRC; those traveling with family should consider other temporary housing options listed at www.housing.umn.edu/international.

Plan Your Transportation from the Airport
Most international students arrive in Minnesota at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The University of Minnesota operates a free Gopher Chauffeur service that will transport you from the airport to campus (and several nearby locations). This van departs the airport hourly every day between Monday, August 15 and Saturday, August 27, and it can be used any time between 10 a.m. and 9:20 p.m. Reservations are recommended, but not required. For more information and to submit your online reservation, visit the Gopher Chauffeur webpage.

Want to know how to find the Gopher Chauffeur at the airport? Download these directions or watch a video on YouTube, Youku, or Facebook. If you need to find other airport transportation options, review the information about ground transportation on the airport's website.

Learn About UMN Student Groups
Joining a student group on campus is a great way to get connected at the University. You can find a list of over 800 groups at sua.umn.edu/groups! Also, you can connect with student groups who have shown an interest in connecting with international students. Please see the list at on the ISSS website for more information. Please also visit www.isss.umn.edu/programs to learn more about the programs and leadership opportunities ISSS organizes for international students.

Resources for Parents

The University of Minnesota has resources and information to help parents better understand your transition. Your parents and family members can view the University Parent website – www.umn.edu/parent – and sign up for a parent listserv by sending their email address to parent@umn.edu. Give this information to your parent!

Parents of international students may attend different Parent Orientation programs.

International Parent Orientation (IPoP) Program (August 23) and Chinese International Parent Orientation Program (CHIPoP) (August 25): Hosted by International Student & Scholar Services. The International and Chinese Parent Orientation Programs (iPoP and ChiPoP) allow your parents to ask questions directly to the UMN staff who specialize in working with international students. IPoP and CHIPoP are a supplement to the two-day University Parent Orientation, and parents are encouraged to register for the OFYP Parent Orientation in addition to iPoP/ChiPoP. There is no additional charge.

For more information and to register, see the ISSS website or this flyer written in Chinese. For questions about IPoP, please e-mail ipop@umn.edu. We are able to respond in different languages, if needed. For questions about CHIPoP, email lixx0887@umn.edu.
