You’ve confirmed your admission to the U of M. Now what?

Dear Transfer Student,

Your college of enrollment has already communicated with you about the steps you need to take to prepare for fall semester, but I wanted to provide you with specific information about your orientation to the University of Minnesota, in general.

Transfer Orientation
To ensure that you are ready for fall, we require all transfer students to participate in a two-step orientation process. By participating in orientation, you will:

  • Understand the academic and community expectations of a U of M student
  • Feel more prepared to transition into the University
  • Become acquainted with the resources available to all U of M students
  • Have a better understanding of the student experience
  • Better understand your responsibility while enrolled at the University
  • Meet new and current transfer students and start making connections

Step 1: Complete Online Orientation
The goal of Online Orientation is to provide you with valuable information about your college of enrollment and about University resources and services. Your adviser will reference the information you learn in the Online Orientation when you register for classes, so it is crucial that you complete this step before you attend Transfer Orientation. If you haven't already, complete Online Orientation now at onlineorientation.umn.edu.

Step 2: Attend an on-campus Transfer Orientation program
At Transfer Orientation you will meet with your college adviser, register for fall courses, and get your official U of M photo ID card. You will also have an opportunity to tour the campus and meet with current transfer students and representatives from a variety of departments to get answers to any questions you might have before classes start. If you have not yet registered for Transfer Orientation, refer to your college checklist.

I work in the Office of Orientation & First-Year Programs and oversee Transfer Orientation. If you have questions, please contact me – or anyone in the OFYP office. We want your transition to the U of M to be great. We look forward to seeing you at Transfer Orientation!

Transfer Welcome Day: Saturday, August 31
Mark your calendar and plan to attend Transfer Welcome Day – the U of M’s official transfer student welcome event! Although Welcome Day is not required for transfer students, it is an excellent opportunity to start settling in at the U. You will mingle with hundreds of new transfer students, meet professional staff, learn about campus resources and student organizations, and get answers to last-minute questions. You will also meet the University mascot, Goldy Gopher, and receive a FREE U of M T-shirt! The full schedule will be posted on our website in July.
