Freshman Orientation is a two-day on-campus program required of all new students. Once you have confirmed your enrollment, you will receive information from your college about your New Student Checklist and registering for Orientation. The New Student Checklist will be available for incoming freshmen in the Class of 2021 who have paid their enrollment confirmation fee on April 5, 2017.
By participating in orientation, you will:
- Understand the academic and community expectations of a University of Minnesota student.
- Feel more prepared to transition into the University.
- Become acquainted with the resources available to University of Minnesota students.
- Meet with an academic advisor and register for fall courses.
- Have a better understanding of the University of Minnesota student experience.
Orientation Leaders guide new students throughout the experience.
After you confirm your enrollment, you will need to complete your New Student Checklist. Here is an example of some of the items you will find on your personalized checklist:
- Complete your Tell Us About Yourself Survey
This 15 minute survey will provide your advisor with the information to help you register for fall classes.
- Select Your Orientation dates
You can select your two-day on-campus Orientation dates after you complete your Tell Us About Yourself survey.
- Complete assigned placement tests
Placement tests must be completed one week prior to your Orientation date
Plus, any additional college-specific checklist items.
Parent Orientation is a great way for families to learn how to better support their students during this time of transition. Registration for Parent Orientation is a separate process from students selecting an Orientation date. While the majority of the Parent Orientatio is seperate from New Student Orientation, there will be a few sessions where you will be together. Encourage your parents and/or family to sign up for Parent Orientation.

Please visit www.shb.umn.edu/waiver.htm to view waiver information and what information you must bring to orientation. Eligible students who do not provide verifiable insurance information at the time of class registration or appropriately waive the Student Health Benefit Plan per established guidelines will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan. Attention International Students
The University of Minnesota requires all international students and their dependents to purchase the University-sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan unless they are eligible for a waiver. To be eligible for a waiver as an International Student, you must be covered by a United States-based employer-sponsored group health plan or the University-sponsored Graduate Assistant Health Plan. As you plan for your arrival, please visit the ISSS website to learn about specific requirements for new international students.
You can set your Freshman Orientation date in August by completing your New Student Checklist. It's important to remember that not all colleges come to Orientation each day and you must sign up to attend Freshman Orientation. To contact your college about signing up for your Orientation program, click here.
We strongly encourage international students to arrive in Minnesota on the suggested arrival date of August 21, 2017. Once on campus you will complete your Immigration Check-in with ISSS in the morning of your Day 1 of Freshman Orientation. You will not be allowed to register for courses until your Immigration Check-In is complete.
