Welcome Week Schedule

The Welcome Week schedule is subject to change. New students will receive a personal schedule upon checking in for the program. Check out the Class of 2020 guide on the U Minnesota mobile app for additional details.

10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Brunch (Residential Students) Residential Dining Halls If you are a residential student, this is the first meal provided by Welcome Week.
1:00-2:15 p.m. House Meeting (Residential Students) Assigned Classroom Meet the people you will be living with all year and learn the key points about living on campus from your Community Advisors.
2:30-4:00 p.m. Small Group Kickoff (Residential Students) Assigned Classroom This is an opportunity for you to meet your small group members and Welcome Week Leaders (WWLs), make initial connections, and learn expectations for the week from your WWLs.
3:30 p.m. Welcome (Off-Campus Students) Northrop Auditorium Start your Welcome Week experience with other new students living off campus and get an overview of how this program will benefit you.
4:15 - 7:00 p.m. Small Group Kickoff & Dinner (Off-Campus Students)

This is an opportunity for you to meet your small group members and Welcome Week Leaders (WWLs), make initial connections, learn expectations for the week from your WWLs and have a nice dinner before heading off to Pride & Spirit.
4:30-6:45 p.m. Dinner (Residential Students) Residential Dining Halls  
7:45-9:15 p.m. Pride & Spirit TCF Bank Stadium U Card graphicJoin the Class of 2020 for a night of Golden Gopher Spirit! This is your chance to learn the top 10 things to know as a Gopher Sports fan!  You will also take the M photo on field.  Doors will open at 6:45 p.m.
9:30-11:30 p.m. RecWell Open House RecWell This is  your chance to see everything RecWell has to offer including a new bouldering and climbing wall, fun and challenging fitness equipment and amazing spaces to work out or just hang out.
10:00 p.m. Connect @10 p.m. (Residential Students) Residence  Halls

Each residence hall will have specific activities planned for a night of relaxation and meeting new people.

At this official welcome to the University of Minnesota, you'll hear from President Kaler and current students, and an introduction to the U of M’s history and traditions.  Doors open at 8:45 a.m.
11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. College Day Activities & Lunch Various Locations Meet faculty and other students, and attend sessions that focus on the unique resources and opportunities available in your chosen college. If you are a student in CLA, CSE, CFANS, or CEHD you will be enrolled in a required class that includes Welcome Week activities.
4:00-6:30 p.m. Free Time Activities   Head back to your room to drop off your belongings and change into your game gear before heading to TCF Bank Stadium for dinner. 
8:00-11:30 p.m. Gopher Football Game TCF Bank Stadium U Card graphic
The Gopher Football team will open their season at TCF Bank Stadium. Gopher Sports is providing complimentary student tickets to first-year students for the football home open as the Gophers take on Oregon State University! 
9:30 p.m. - 12:00 a.m. MAC Dance McNamara Alumni Center Make sure to stop by the McNamara Alumni Center for a post-game dance party for the Class of 2020.  Featuring a DJ, you can show off your Gopher dance moves!
10:00 p.m. Connect @10 p.m. (Residential Students) Residence Halls Each residence hall will have specific activities planned for a night of relaxation and meeting new people.

You will spend the majority of this day with your small group learning to navigate the East Bank, West Bank, and St. Paul Campus. You will ride the Campus Connector and attend a variety of sessions & events that highlight respect, resources and responsibilities for your transition to the University. Here are a few program highlights for the day:
  • Live Like a Student: Learn how to live within your budget, how to stay out of debt, where to find cheap discounts on campus and other tips for financial success during your college career.
  • Respect U: Learn what it takes to Respect U and your University! This event will expose you to critical issues that are important to your student community.
  • Engagement Sessions: You will be able to identify two interest sessions in the online Event Selection to attend on this day. Select from sessions offered by campus departments who are here to help you have a successful first year. 
  • Sustainability Action!: Gather for dynamic displays and activities to see how your actions add up to a sustainable campus.
  • Academic Survival in Action!: Scope out academic resources available to you, as well as, possible study spaces as you explore what University Libraries have to offer you."

Jermaine will share how to create an intentional first year of college and make it your own. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. For more information on Jermaine, visit www.jermainedavis.com.
10:00 p.m.- 1:00 a.m. Student Unions & Activities Showcase CMU This U of M tradition provides free/low-cost events for students throughout the semester. Get hypnotized by a hypnotist, break loose on the dance floor, enjoy free food, and more!

9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Community Engagement & Brunch Bruininks Hall & Assigned Classroom

You will be assigned a time and specific rotation schedule that includes brunch and is based on the Community Engagement Session you select and your assigned group activities.  

  • Community Engagement Sessions: Spend time with a local non-profit organization and find out how you can get involved with an issue in which you are passionate. 
  • Small Group Wrap-Up: Regroup with your small group to discuss ways you want to get involved on campus and make a difference. Learn ways in which you can become an active member of the U of M community."

Explore ways to get involved at this event showcasing campus student groups and local businesses, while enjoying giveaways, food samples, and prizes!
4:30-7:00 p.m. Dinner Residential Dining Halls

7:00-9:30 p.m. Free Time

Spend the evening on the rides at Nickelodeon Universe or exploring Sea Life Aquarium in the Mall of America.

11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Community Exploration Trips You will have an opportunity to ride the new light rail and explore Nicollet Mall, Uptown, Minnehaha Park, or Downtown St. Paul. Meet up with your small group one last time to reflect on and put an end to your Welcome Week experience.
